Tries to walk up a step ladder but sees the street outside and falls. 

3. Meets with Gavin Elster. He's in ship building business. I find it dull, wife's family is all gone...father's brother deals with interests in the east...San Francisco's disappearing fast. 

a favour - follow my wife. Some harm ...someone dead. Can someone dead take possession of a living being...this has happened to my wife...sounds idiotic...cloud comes into her eyes and she goes blank...followed her one day acting like someone I didn't know...drove to golden gate park...stared at portals of the past...speedometer said she had driven 94 miles...i know private eyes...i need a friend...I'm retired...come to the opera tonight...

4. Ernies. Camera tracks from Stewart across the room. She looks to him. She turns away. 

5. Follows her green car (green dress). Gets out down an alleyway. into a dark room, opens door, she's in a florist...She drives away...goes to a church...leaves by the back door...she's looking at a gravestone.

Carlotta Valdez...died 1857...

6. Art Gallery...staring a painting...bunch of flowers matches those in painting...Hairstyle is the same...he gestures over the guide...Portrait of Carlotta Valdez...

- Music is very reminiscent of Raiders...

7. McKittrick Hotel...sees her upstairs taking jacket off...

8. He enters hotel...who has the room on second floor...privacy...he pays her...Mrs Valdez...how long has she had the room...two weeks...just comes to sit...she hasn't been here at all...I've been here...her key is on the rack...

He looks at chandelier...Mr Detective would you like to come and look? He goes up...she's not there and her car is gone...

9. Back at house he sees her car with the flowers on the dashboard. 

10. Midge - who do you know who knows history of San Francisco? Prof Saunders...no the small stuff, people you never heard of...Pop  Leven, owns a book shop.

11. Bookshop...Carlotta...the hotel was her house...built for her by...can't remember...came from somewhere small, mission settlement, very young, found dancing in cabaret by that man, took her and built her a great house...there was a child...then he threw her away, had no other children, kept the child and threw her away, a man could do that in those days...had the power and the freedom...she was alone in the great house...her clothes becoming old and patched...became mad...where is my child...she died by her own hand...

12. Nighttime...Beautiful Elster has come back and taken up life as Carlotta? Is she pretty? Looks at the book, flashback to her...

13. With Elster in club...tells him what he's found...Elster has several pieces of jewellery from Carlotta until now...stares into the mirror...wife's grandmother? Great grandmother...who's loss drove Carlotta mad. Anyone could be obsessed with a past...Elster knows nothing about her...she's no longer my wife...her mother told me most of them before she died...didn't tell her because insanity runs in her veins..

14. Follows Elspeth back to art gallery...she stares at painting.

15. Follows her to Fort Point...along coast road...underneath Golden Gate Bridge...she throws flowers into the sea...she jumps...43 mins...he leaps in and saves her...takes her to car...

16. His place. She's in his bed...phone rings...she comes out...I fell into the bay and you fished me out?  I don't remember...where were you just before...you're terribly direct...where had you been just before? the art gallery...I've never been inside...pins in my hair...and my purse please....could have looked in my car...John Ferguson...good strong name...I shall call you Mr Ferguson...call me Scotty...or even John...I'm married you know...has this ever happened to you before...falling into san francisco bay...call...I'll bring her home soon...she doesn't know what happened...She's 26, Carlotta commited suicide when she was 26...there's a thud...she's gone!

17. Outside. Greta arrives and see's Elster pull away. and drives off. [assumes she slept with her]. 

18. New Day...He's following her again...seemingly aimlessly...pulls up outside his appartment! He's leaving a letter...a formal thank you note..I enjoyed talking to you...I remembered your address from a landmark...I hope we do meet again sometime...don't you think it's a waste to wander separately...two together are going somewhere

Two desire lines now - her mystery and will they get together, how will that be resolved?

19. Redwoods...They drive out of town...all the people on earth will die and they'll keep on living.

Somewhere here I was born...and I hear I died...you took no notice...she disappears behind a tree and is gone...he finds her...where are you now...tall trees...been here before...when were you born...long ago...I didn't jump...please don't ask me...somewhere in the light...promise me you wont ask me again...please...

Noir you don't need many characters but you can have this huge thematic rebelation.

20. Coast...

Chinese say once you've saved a person's life you're responsible for them forever...walking down a long corridor that once was a mirror...when I come to the end...there's nothing but darkness...when I walk into the darkness I'll die...but I always come back before then...except once...

We start to believe that it's real

There's a room...I sit there alone...an open grave I look down into...how do you know? I know...there's a tower and a garden below...it seems to be in Spain...if I could just find the key and put it together...explain it away....if I'm mad that would explain it wouldn't it...I'm not mad, I don't want to die...there's someone within me...

Midpoint - They Kiss. 

21. Midge House. did you get my message...desparate urge...where were you...what will we talk about at dinner...what I've been doing...if you want to...back to my first love...painting...wasting your time in the underwear department...painting...she's painted a picture of her as Carlotta Valdez...he leaves.. she's distresed...

22. His appartment...Elster arrives...I had a dream...the tower again...a village of square, an old cloister, a old house, a livery stable...at the end a whitewashed stone house...and a hotel?...a saloon? It's all there, there's no dream...an old spanish mission, preserved as a museum, you've been there before...think hard...I walked to the church and the darkness closed in...I'll take you down there this afternoon and it will finish your dream...You'll come back around noon. 

No instances of Vertigo yet!

23. They drive out through trees...to Spanish Mission...She's sat in a carriage...it's all real! There were horses in the stall...forbidden to play here...Sister Theresa would scald us...they kisss...she looks away...I love you, I love you too...she runs away...it's too late...we're in love that's all that counts! Let me go into the church alone...sees the clock tower and thinks she's going to jump...sees she's run up the tower...he's crippled by Vertigo...She falls and dies!

As they discover her, he escapes.

24. Tribunal...An unfortunate choice...need for behaviour to protect her life...fear of heights make him powerless when most needed...character and ability...once before under similar circumstances, dismissed as unfortunate incident...saved the woman's life when she threw herself into the bay...mental blackout...couldn't face own weakness...between him and his own conscience...jury retires...

Gavin...sorry Scotty that was rough...it was my responsibility...I'm getting out...I can't stay here...get away as far as I can...I probably never will come back...you and I know who killed Madeleine. 

25. Bed. He's haunted by nightmares...Valdez...her jewellery....the grave...

26. Hospital...mozart...musical therapy...sweep the cobwebs away...music for everything...try Johnny...catatonic...

27. Midge and Doctor...how long to pull out of this...six months to a year...melancholia and guilt complex...he's in love with her...still is...she creeps down the hall...

28. Big GV of San Francisco, reverse pan with green car at house.

He sees her leaving...How did you get this car...bought it from a man who used to live here...and his wife, I didn't know her...

29. Enters Ernies. he sits, camera pulls in, he sees her...it's not her...

30. At Gallery. Sees a woman...not her.

31. Florist...pull out of flowers...sees a woman in a green dress...

32. Street. Follows woman to empire hotel...she opens window...

33. Hotel Int. answers...ask you some questions...a pikc up...I just want to talk to you...you remind me of somebody...I can yell awfully loud...Judy Barton...how are you living here...about three years, Salina Kansas...driver's licence...you have got it bad havent you? do i really look like her? She's dead isn't she? that's me with my mother...my mother married again...I didn't like the guy...been here three years, honest...will you have dinner with me? cos I remind you of her...because I'd like dinner with you...okay...shot of hair...she turns around...looks anxious...

34. Flashback to church...how the crime could have been done...her flashback! Audience Revelation.

She packs a suitcase....her suit is stil in there...she writes a note...Dearest Scottie, and so you found me....I wanted to see you again just once...you were the victim, gavin astors plan to murder his wife...lived in the country and rarely came to town...Carlotta story was made up...you knew she'd never get up the tower...I'm still in love with you...if I had the nerve I'd stay and lie...i don't know whether I have the nerve to try...she packs to leave...

35. Ernies. Blond comes in she realises what he sees.

36. Hotel...can I see you tomorrow...I have a job...let me take care of you...we could just see a lot of each other...he sees her silhouette...illuminated in green...I could phone the store in the morning...

37. Outside...the walk...lovers kissing...pick out flowers...

38. Gray...what are you doing...we may still have that model...you want me to look like her...we'll take it...may we have it by tonight...

39. His room...why are you doing this...i don't know...I want to go away...you wouldn't let me...first happy days in a year...I remind you of her...there's something in you that...like me just the way I am...it can't matter to you...will you love me...I don't care anymore about me...let's sit by the fire....

43. A road at night...terribly hungry...back through the old trees...one final thing I have to do, then I'll be free of the past...i have to go back into the past once more...Madeleine died here Judy...I need you to be Madeleine for a while...kissed her for the last time...I followed her it was too late...I want to stop being haunted...his vertigo kicks in...he follows her...the necklace, that was your slip...this is my second chance...the real wife not you...you were the counterfeit...why did you scream...you wanted to stop it...why did you scream? bet you're a wonderful swimmer aren't you? why pick on me? Your accident! We're going up to look at the scene of the crime...then you sneaked down and drove her into town...did he ditch you? all that wife's money and then freedom and then power...Carlotta's necklace...you shouldn't have been that sentimental...I was safe when you found me...I loved you so...there's no bringing her back...i heard voices...she falls...they ring the bell...
